The Place

Butano
State Park
December 15, 2012

Granite Point

Created in 1956 as part of an effort to save old-growth redwood, Butano is open and suitable for hiking year round. It abounds with redwood groves, lush streams and panoramic vistas of the nearby coastline. In spite of its pristine beauty, because of the difficulty in getting there from the Bay Area, Butano remains one of the least visited parks on the peninsula. This time of year we might have the whole park to ourselves!

Walking the Walk

We will meet at 10am at the Visitorís Center and take Jackson Flats Tr. to Canyon , to Indian , to Olmo Fire Rd. where we will have our meeting, about half-way through the hike. Then Olmo to Doe Ridge , to Goat Hil , to Olmo Fire Rd. again, to Ano Nuevo and home. Relatively long (about 10 miles) and moderately steep (1400í elev. rise total with some ups and downs). Part of this route could be slippery and dangerous when wet;if itís raining, we can take an alternate route in the park.
