The Place


Mount Tamalpais known locally as Mt Tam is a symbolic peak in Marin County. Much of Mount Tamalpais is protected within public lands via the Municipal Water District, state and National Park Service.

Walking the Walk

Level: 3.5 - Miles: 7 - Elevation: 1,300'

We will begin at the Cataract Trail trailhead. We will hike 1.5 miles to Laurel Dell, turn East (left) on Laurel Dell fire road for 1.1 miles to Potrero Camp where we will stop for lunch and the meeting. From there we will take Kent Trail to Alpine Lake and return to Cataract Trail via Helen Markt trail.

Know Before You Go

Beware! The first 2 miles of this hike are a steep climb with many large steps made of wood & stone. Footing can be slippery and unstable. Hiking boots are recommended Dress in layers. Some areas can be damp and cool while sunnier areas can be quite warm. 2 Liters of liquids are recommended. From Fairfax to the trailhead is a very narrow and curvy road – plan to take 20 minutes for this part of the drive. No parking fees. There is parking along Fairfax-Bolinas road. You must park with all four wheels off of the asphalt a ticket is assured if you do not! Carpooling is strongly encouraged! Dogs must be kept on leash on all trails.

Hike start time promptly at 10am

Directions:

Take US 101 to the Golden Gate Bridge. From the North Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge take 101N 11 miles to the Sir Frances Drake Blvd. exit. Take this exit and go North for 3.6 miles on Sir Frances Drake Blvd. to the Red Hill intersection. Bear left on Sir Frances Drake Blvd. for 1.7 miles. Turn left of Pacheco Ave. for ½ block, Right on Broadway for 1 block. Turn left onto Bolinas – Fairfax Road which you stay on for 8.1 miles to Alpine Lake. Park at the Cataract trailhead, .2 miles after crossing the dam. Meet at Cataract Trailhead .2 miles after crossing Alpine Lake Dam.

Drive time: 2.5 hours - Parking Free - Dogs must remain on leash
